What are the AfterSchool Academies?
The AfterSchool Academies are a free after school program for students at Transformation Waco Schools. The purpose of the academies are to provide fun after school learning opportunities for our students by inviting the community to share their knowledge with the next generation.
How does it work?
3:30 - 4:30 - (Elementary Schools only) AfterSchool Academy students gather for a meal, a short time for homework help or tutoring, and a brief recess.
4:30 - 5:30 - (Elementary and Middle Schools) Students divide into small groups to attend fantastic academy courses Led by brilliant community volunteers.
What could I do?
We are looking for two kinds of volunteers:
Tutors
Tutors work with elementary school students (1st - 5th) from 3:30 - 4:30. Tutors arrive on campus at 3:30. They assist with meal time (This is a great time to get in some visiting and get to know the students!) Their main work is helping with tutoring using the structured tutoring materials provided. Then, if possible, they stay and help supervise the students during recess.
Academy Course Leaders
Academy Course Leaders work with Elementary Students (1st - 5th grade) or Middle School Students (6th - 8th grade) from 4:30 - 5:30. Academy Course Leaders work in teams of 2 or 3 to develop and present "Academy Courses" to small groups of students (5 or 6). The Academy Courses meet one day a week for 6 or 7 weeks depending on the semester.
An academy course can be on just about any topic (subject to approval). The possibilities are endless! Do you love to travel? You could share about the places you have visited or you could teach kids how to plan a trip. Do you like art, dance, music, yoga, soccer, calligraphy? Our kids would love to learn from you. Do you love
your job? We have students who would love to learn about what you do. Do you know about cars? Or how to grow flowers? Or how to run a grocery store? Any of these topics would make great courses. Topics offered in the
past have included drumming, dance, pioneer games, travel, puzzles and codes, gardening, reading club, girls/boys leadership…and many more.
If you are interested in leading an academy course, we would love to talk to you more about how it would work.
Please contact the AfterSchool Academy manager at the school where you would like to lead your course:
